“Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests went
to work and rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They dedicated it
and set its doors in place, building as far as the Tower
of the Hundred, which they dedicated, and as far as the
Tower of Hananel. The men of Jericho built the adjoining
section, and Zaccur son of Imri built next to them.”
-- Nehemiah 3:1-2
Strange names, powerful picture. The story told in the
first few chapters of Nehemiah, however, is a great
example of a community pitching in to get the job done.
Later, Nehemiah goes to his hometown of Jerusalem to
find the walls of the city in shambles. He knew the city
needed to be rebuilt, but he also knew that he couldn’t
do it himself.
God gave Nehemiah a vision to repair the walls of the
city. It involved many people doing their share. Each
man, with his family, built the part of the wall that
protected his home. A sense of ownership gave the
workers the passion to complete the task, despite the
obstacles.
Our city needs to be rebuilt for God. We’re not just
talking about physical rebuilding. We need to reclaim
our city as a fortress for the Kingdom. But that
includes getting our hands dirty in physical work, just
like in Nehemiah’s story. By doing physical work, we’re
winning a spiritual battle. The surrounding
community--our community--is taking notice.
We will work with eight different ministry partners,
including the Hope Center, Mission Adelante, the Urban
Scholastic Center, Grace Lutheran Church, Hillcrest
Transitional Housing, Rachel’s Tea House, Salvation Army
and City Union Mission We’ll be doing skill-specific
tasks like remodeling and electrical work, plus general
maintenance that anybody can do, like yard work and
painting. If you have a desire to serve, there’s a spot
for you. Just go to the “Register Now” and be counted!
What if...? is a complementary and cooperative movement in Kansas City where churches of different styles, tribes, and sizes are banding
together to do and be the church together. Did we mention "together"?
In 2008, three churches came together in relationship to accomplish what no one church could accomplish alone. Through mutual respect and friendship those three churches grew to eleven churches in 2009. We are now praying that thirty churches will come together in 2010 as a Light of unity and partnership in Kansas City! See the list of churches below who have already committed to partnering together for
